Sunshine in the North West Highlands
Today I was out on Stac Pollaidh with Amy and Lily. The ridge of high pressure brought some beautiful sunshine and blue sky. The air was cold, about 10 degrees at 600m, and in the south easterly breeze it felt even colder.
For 9 week old Lily it was her first trip to the North West Highlands and she seemed to enjoy it. |

Scrambling on Skye
The last few days I have been working on Skye. This time I was out with Steve and Alan. Wednesday I think I had one of the wettest days on Sgurr Nan Gillean, even getting wet in my brand new waterproofs. We had planned to do Pinnacle Ridge but decided to change to the West Ridge which was slightly more sheltered from the gale force North Easterlies.
Thursday was relatively dry but cold and windy as we made our way over the 4 tops of Sgurr a' Mhadaidh.
Yesterday we finally had some views of the ridge as we traversed from Sgurr Sgumain over Sgurr Alasdair, Sgurr Thearlich and Sgurr Mhic Choinnich. We finished our day with a run down the An Stac screes into the first sunshine of the week.
It looks like there will be a couple of fine dry days in the west with this high pressure before the lows squeeze it out. |

A very autumnal week on Skye
I was on Skye for the last 5 days with Bruce. We had hoped to do a traverse of the ridge but with wild winds, low cloud and regular precipitation it was not possible.
We did however have a great time on many of the scrambles that Skye has to over even if you can't get 'the ridge' done. On Monday we did Pinnacle Ridge in the monsoon rains. On Tuesday and Wednesday we explored lesser known scrambles like the North rib of An Diallaid and Tuppenny Buttress followed by a traverse of the tops of Bidein Druim nan Ramh. We climbed Window Buttress on Thursday in horizontal sleet and strong winds which made it quite challenging!
Finally on Friday we had some sunshine, in between the hail showers, and traversed the main ridge from Coire na Banachdich to Bealach na Glaic Moire. |

Great couple of days scrambling on Skye
I have spent the last couple of days out on Skye with Kath and Steve.
Our first day was spent in glorious hot sunshine on the Clach Glas-Bla Bheinn traverse. These two mountains are outliers to the main Cuillin Ridge but are made of the same rough Gabro rock. The scramble along these two mountains is one of my favourites and when it is clear like Wednesday you have an awesome view of the whole of the main Skye Ridge.
On our second day we ascended Pinnacle Ridge on Sgurr nan Gillean in 'atmospheric' cloudy weather and then summitted am Basteir, Kath and Steve's final Munro on Skye. |
