Weather and
Avalanche Information

The Mountain Weather Information Service provides detailed weather forecasts for 8 areas of the United Kingdom.

Met Check offer some good mountain forecasts for across Scotland. They also have a good long range assessment for the UK weather in general.

The SAIS publish a daily avalanche forecasts for 5 climbing areas across Scotland during the winter season. For the SAIS this is 15th December - 15th April.

Climbing Walls

The Ice Factor in Kinlochleven has the world's biggest indoor ice wall and the UK's highest articulated climbing wall.

Representative Bodies
and Clubs

The Association of Mountaineering Instructors is the representative body for professionally qualified Mountaineering Instructors in the British Isles.

The BMC is the representative body that exists to protect the freedoms and promote the interests of climbers, hill walkers and mountaineers, including ski-mountaineers.

The Mountaineering Council of Scotland is the representative body for climbers, walkers, mountaineers and cross-country skiers who enjoy the Scottish mountains.

The Scottish Mountaineering Club utilises the wide experience of its members, and other mountaineers, in order to support an active publishing program covering the hills and mountains of Scotland. They are one of the best and most extensive series of guidebooks for walkers and climbers in Scotland.

Since 1818 the Grivel family of blacksmiths have been making equipment for alpinists in Italy at the foot of Mont Blanc.

Deuter have been making sacks since 1898 when Hans Deuter supplied the Bavarian Royal Mail with mailbags and post sacks.

Macpherson Mountaineering is a traditional mountaineering shop situated in Inverness. It was established 35 years ago and is run by a Dennis and Pete Macpherson. They offer friendly, sound advice on walking, climbing and mountaineering. They are also keen mountaineers themselves.

International Links

Green Discovery Japan offer Rafting, Canyoning and Mountain Biking. Run by my friend Lincoln Taylor they operate in the mountains North West of Tokyo in the centre of Japan.

WorldClimb is a definitive directory for everything in the World to do with climbing. The website consists of indexed and categorised websites.

Books and Guidebooks

Cicerone Press publishes guidebooks for long distance walks and treks, day walks, family walks, scrambling, climbing, ice climbing and mountaineering. They provide the information needed to enable you to plan and enjoy your favourite outdoor activity, whether in the British Isles or overseas.

Accommodation and Transport

Happy Highland Campers is a family business based in Inverness, the Highland capital. Owned and run by Neil and Esther Dickinson and their 2 year old son, and future hier, Lewis.

Highland Campervans is owned and run by Catherine and Stephen Bunn. They are a small family company based in Inverness. They hire campervans for touring the Highlands and providing essential shelter in mountain weather.

Other instructors and guides websites

The Mountain Instructors Community is a collaboration of independent climbing instructors who provide climbing and mountain skills training throughout the UK. Membership is open to any instructor who has gained the 'Mountaineering Instructor Certificate' and who also has breadth to their personal climbing and instructional experience.

Mountain-Trips runs a range of bespoke instructional courses in rock climbing, scrambling and mountain walking within the U.K. Each course is individually tailored for any level, allowing you to learn the skills you want to learn at your pace. Transport is provided from the South East of England.
