Still very cold and icy
Kenny, Blair and John made the journey a couple of days ago to Coire Scamadal on Skye.
Kenny said "What a place- Ben Udlaidh on Steroids with a shorter walk in! Plenty of ice with varying degrees of quality and attachment. We did the left hand line Scamtastic which was very good."
Mike Lates has an article here on the Coire: Coire Scamadal Article |

Continuing cold with high pressure across the UK
Here in Inverness there is sea ice forming in sheltered bays for the 3rd year in a row.
The cold air also means that moisture in the snow pack will move towards the surface creating surface hoar in the form of faceted crystals. This layer of crystals does not bond very well to other snow so is often associated with a weak layer in the snow pack and a higher chance of avalanches.
It looks like the temperatures will gradually rise as 2 low pressure systems try to squeeze the high out of the way. |

Another spell of wintery weather coming our way
With a blocking high pressure runnning from Greenland to the Bay of Biscay any low pressure systems and their associated fronts will have to strike us from the frozen Arctic north.
It looks like the first front will arrive tonight over north Scotland and here in Inverness the temperature has already started dropping from the balmy heat of the last few days.
Don't forget that the Scottish Avalanche Information Service start their forecasting across all 5 areas tomorrow. |
