Northern Cairngorms February weekend
I was out working with the University of Highlands and Islands West Highland College Mountaineering Club. On Saturday we went rock climbing at Huntly's Cave. It was quite busy as everyone had read the forecast that said there'd by 70mph winds on the tops! Then on Sunday with lighter winds forecast we went into the Northern Cairngorms and went scrambling up the Fiachaill a'Coire an T-sneachda. Very little snow around for mid February Facebook photo album here: Some Facebook photos. I was working as the St John Scotland Mountain Safety Instructor this weekend. |

Very warm February weekend
Not very wintery this weekend but I still managed to teach some useful skills to Heriot-Watt university Mountaineering Club. On Saturday we climbed 2 hills near Achnasheen. We concentrated on navigation and route finding skills. Not enough snow around to do winter skills. Then on Sunday we climbed at Moy Crag where some folk did their first outdoor leading. Strathclyde University Mountaineering Club winter weekend
I was in Glencoe this weekend with Strathclyde University. On Saturday the tailend of Storm Eric was in charge and with 80mph winds forecast at 900m we stayed low and climbed the Pap of Glencoe. Fortunately it wasn't as wet as expected. On Sunday it was much colder with some fresh overnight snow. There was hardly any wind and great views with just one snow shower passing through. We climbed Buachaille Etive Beag. Facebook photo album here: Some Facebook photos. I was working as the St John Scotland Mountain Safety Instructor this weekend. |

Aberdeen University Lairig Mountaineering Club winter weekend
Had a great weekend out with The Lairig Club based at the Clasgour Hut It had been very cold the end of last week but with not a huge amount of snow around and virtually no base. On Saturday I headed up on to Beinn Toaig and found some great grade 2 climbing terrain to introduce Hamish and Fergus to winter climbing. On Sunday it was a very different day with fresh snow, low visibility and a strong westerly wind. We climbed the munro Stob a' Choire Odhair, did lots of nav and had a chance to try out crampons for the first time for many of the team I had. Facebook photo album here: Some Facebook photos. I was working as the St John Scotland Mountain Safety Instructor this weekend. |
