Climbing in the sunshine at Cummingston

Today we had excellent weather for a great days climbing at Cummingston. Eric and Sarah are up from Oxford for a week in the highlands and decided to have a couple of days instruction before heading off to Gairloch.

Yesterday we had a day at Duntelchaig where we looked at rope work skills, placing gear and stance management. We also did some single pitch and multipitch climbing.

Hot and sunny on Skye

Yesterday I was on Skye with Kev and Sean. We had hot and sunny weather for a traverse of Clach Glas and Bla Bheinn. This is a fantastic scrambling route with some tricky route finding and great climbing.

Although there were plenty of folk on the munro Bla Bheinn we had Clach Glas to ourselves.

Perfect conditions for a 1 day Skye Ridge Traverse

On Monday John and I traversed the Cuillin Ridge on Skye in just over 11 hours. This great mountaineering adventure had been on John's wish list for some time and while he was up in Scotland ticking the last of his Munros we managed to achieve his objective in fine style.

With a front teasing us to the west and a blanket of cloud to the east we had clear tops and cool air for an awesome day out.

A weekend of scrambling skills with the Highland Hillwalking Club

Over the last 2 days I was out with members of the Highland Hillwalking Club. They wanted to look at the skills required to stay safe when faced with a scramble.

We looked at the physical climbing skills both in ascent and descent. We covered the judgement skills which it requires to make good route choice dependent upon your group and their ability. We also looked at rope work skills that might be needed.

Although we had one thunderstorm on Saturday most of the weekend was dry and sunny.

Warm summer cragging at Golspie

Today I was out with Deziree up near Golspie. The conglomerate bolted crag of Silver Rock provides some good sporting routes. The easier ones are long but the harder ones are really quite short powerful problems.

We had a great time up on the routes with a good breeze and no midges (for most of the time!). The crag has such a pleasant outlook but it was almost too warm on the Southerly aspect.
