A cold Arctic blast this week

With a low pressure over Russia it looks like we will have a cold arctic air flow for the rest of the week and snow too.

Something I heard about over the weekend which I think is important for mountaineers is the emergencySMS service which has been going for about 1 year now. It was first set up for the deaf and hard of hearing but it has more recently been seen as an important service for folk in an emergency in the mountains when mobile coverage is so low that a voice call can not be made but a text can be sent.

You need to register you phone first so do it now. For information on the service and how to register you phone go to: http://emergencysms.org.uk/index.php

Winter storm on it's way

Today I scraped my windscreen for the first time this year and there has been a fresh dusting of snow on the hills on several mornings this week.

Today Mark and Deziree heading into Coire an T-sneachda in the cairngorms and climbed The Hybrid in what Mark descibed as “ OK winter conditions, the rock was more snowed up lower down with some rhyme and snow higher up on the rocks. Turf again higher was better, some ice forming and it felt like proper winter, temperature wise.”

Well it looks like we are in for a proper winter storm tonight with storm force winds and snow forecast down to low levels especially in the south and east highlands.
