Warm but wintry in the Cairngorms
An unusual event took place this weekend. Mountaineering Clubs from different university worked together to arrange a joint meet. Yes, it was carnage! However, I managed to gather a group of students from Edinburgh uni on the Saturday and Glasgow Uni on the Sunday and we headed into the hills. There was plenty of snow above 800m but the temperatures were above freezing so it was thawing rapidly. We had some very good conditions for practicing navigation. White out above 900m. Cold and clear in Torridon
This weekend I was working with students from Edinburgh university Hill Walking Club. Friday afternoon I managed a quick boulder on the Torridon boulders in lovely conditions. On Saturday and sunday I was out with some students learning general hill skills and navigation. Although there was some water ice on the path we didn't need our crampons and iceaxes but it's good to pack them just in case at this time of year. More snow fell last night all along the west coast. A wet weekend at Kingussie
This weekend I was working with students attending the Mountaineering Scotland SMART weekend. This weekend has now been running for 15 years and gives students the opportunity to learn lots of skills either for climbing or walking in the Scottish hills. I was working at Kingussie crag both days with students who had a mix of experience and just wanted to learn more about staying safe at the crag. Facebook photo album here:
