Winter Skills Courses

Winter in the Highlands of Scotland can be very hostile but with the right skills and preparation you can really enjoy your time in the hills. Perhaps you are a regular summer walker and want to learn more about walking in winter. If you have never used an ice axe or crampons then this is the course for you. Maybe you have a weekend free or a couple of days midweek, either way we can create a course to suit your needs.

Winter Skills can be run from the end of December to the end of March and at most mountain venues across the highlands.

Check out what past clients have to say about Alpha Mountaineering on our Client Testimonials page.

Course content

During a winter skills course we will introduce you to the following skills:

  • Planning a winter day out.
  • Choosing your winter equipment.
  • Using crampons for the first time.
  • Understanding the principles of safe travel with an ice axe.
  • Navigation in the winter environment.
  • Avalanche awareness.
  • The use of a rope in an emergency.
  • We might also have a chance to look at emergency shelters.

Programmes are dependent upon weather and conditions.
